Making insect repellent with American Beautyberry leaves is a natural and eco-friendly alternative to chemical laden products. The American Beautyberry, produces clusters of vibrant purple berries, but its leaves are where the true potential lies for crafting an effective bug repellent. Indigenous peoples and early settlers recognized the pest repelling properties of these leaves, which contain compounds that are believe

d to deter mosquitoes and other unwanted insects.

To create your own natural insect repellent, begin by foraging for fresh American Beautyberry leaves. It’s essential to use leaves that are healthy and free from pesticides. After gathering, rinse the leaves thoroughly to remove any dirt. Next, chop the leaves finely and place them in a pot with water. Simmer the mixture for about 20-30 minutes, allowing the beneficial oils to infuse into the water. After it cools, strain the mixture and transfer it into a spray bottle. You can also use 91% rubbing alcohol by emptying the alcohol out, stuffing as many beautyberry leaves as you can in the empty bottle. Next fill it back up with the alcohol and let it set for 3 days. Strain it out and put it in a pump spray bottle.

When using your homemade insect repellent, apply it generously to exposed skin and clothing, being sure to shake the bottle well before use. While this natural remedy can be effective, it’s essential to note that reapplication may be necessary, especially after sweating or if you’re in a heavily infested area. By utilizing American Beautyberry leaves, not only do you create a safer option for yourself and the environment, but you also connect with traditional practices that honor the natural world.
